Spearfishing on Madeira Island

Madeira Island offers great spearfishing conditions for amateur and pro spearos. The water is often clean and warm during the Summer months with water temperature averaging 22 degrees and in Winter dropping to 18 degrees.

Spearfishing permits are required and can be obtained in Funchal´s Captania. One can opt for an express licence which costs €10.00 or a standard licence costing €5.50 but has a waiting period of two days.

Below are some of the basic regulations for spearfishing on Madeira
  • 5 fish catch per day
  • No scuba equipment whilst spearfishing
  • No pressurized spearguns
  • Capture of Dusky grouper is illegal
I will be posting some of the best spearfishing spots I have found over the next couple of weeks along with some images. For now enjoy this video on youtube from jovemrafa2
